nT Colorations offers to color an image in several ways. It can be done from a color library, from an HSL slider, from a color picker with different coloring methods, or by exchanging and copying colors from channels.

Channel Options

On the top of the window you can see the color channels. Double-click on the cannel will open the 'Channel options' that provides channel settings.

  • Name - Channel separations, which can be selected from the dialog, shown or hidden, and hide other channels.

Hide others can be done also when click and hold on the channel separations patch.

  • Methods - Superposition methods to display the channel colors.
  • Opacity and Transparency - In percentage, the lower the percentage the lighter the color will be.
  • Color - Displays the color and color information.
  • Image - Another RGB image can be assigned to the channel with Method Texture - Fill.
  • Comments - A tab to add channel comments, which will be saved in the XCM or XCL text file, and visible in specific Layouts.
  • HSL (color wheel icon) Changing the color by Hue sliders.
  • Color replacement (drop icon) - Changing color to ink recipe when working with printer colorways.
  • Previous and Next - Lets you switch to previously or next separation channel.

But also out of the channel options dialog it allows you to do actions with keyboard shortcuts combinations. It allows you to view the selected channels by holding the mouse over one of them in grayscale with the Alt key pressed and changes the modifier to access the color picker with double click on the color channel with the Cmd key pressed. Also, it visualizes all the selected channels by holding the mouse over one of them with Shift key. To exchange colors from two separations, drag the color from one separation onto the other, by pressing the ⌘ key (Mac), or the Ctrl key (PC). Exchanging colors can be done both from the small previews or the big preview color patches. If you just want to copy a color, drag the color of one separation onto the other, but this time pressing the Ctrl key.

Using the contextual menu you have the quick access for channel options. Click- right on mouse and the contextual menu will be displayed:

  • Hide or show colors
  • Activate and assign superposition coloring methods
  • Lock or unlock colors in colorations
  • Opening color picker
  • Synchronize colors
  • Assigning or change the channel group

When changing channels options the interface is indicating the changes visually. It applies a mask on inactive or non-visible channels.

Double-click on the color pixel in the preview will select the color channel.

Lock channels with sub-option 'Lock', that can apply the lock or unlock in the selected channel in all colorways.

Channel Groups

Channel-group provides the probability to have separation channels embedded in one color group. The grouping allows adapting the lightness and gradient of the same color when is used in the same group, also when working with color libraries. From 'Channel options' dialog you can co-ordinate the channel group assignment and order.

When modifying the dark or light color, we reverse and modify the color with the previous value.

Coloring from Color Library

Coloring with color libraries can be done in different ways.

1) The first option is to select the color from the library and press Ctrl + click on the separation (Mac) or use the secondary mouse button (PC).

2) Use the keyboard to select the color from the library and press Alt + Intro.

3) Select the color in the color library and drag it on the color of the separation. If you have a library with color gradients, the most intense color will be applied. If you want to apply a lighter tone, select it while pressing the Alt key.

4) Apply the color directly to channel with 'Alt'+Double click to assign color libraries to color channels.

Coloring with Color Picker

Coloring with color picker gives you possibilities to use apply different color values and different methods. Double-click on a channel separation and you will access 'Channel options'.

Various superposition Methods used by Inèdit can be selected from the following drop-down list.

  • Addition
  • Multiply
  • Pigment
  • Discharge
  • Texture

The option Inactive will deactivate the channel, and the other ones to color it.

For example of the coloring method result, we will use one separation channel with the same color.

Color - Addition: Addition of blended and layered colors.

Color - MultiplyMultiplies blended and layered colors.

Color - PigmentSimulates Pigment printing.

Color - DischargeSimulates Discharge printing.

In the Color tab, which is the default when opening channel options, the channel can be colored with the color picker. A Colorations Color picker pops up when clicking on the color patch, where you can change the color by moving the point in the color space, enter values in Lab, RGB, CMYK and HSB, or reading by spectrophotometer (follow the steps as described in section Measure colors to Color Library). The color picker works with 32bits color precision and supports Hexadecimal color codes. In Preferences, if the option to 'Use only color library' is enabled it will synchronize always the colors of color library when using color picker. Optionally, from Preferences, the color picker can be switched to Photoshop color picker, which is unsupported in measuring colors and ink recipes.

Device colorways % values

For special device inks you need to convert the coloration into device ink profile before starting coloring. Afterwards, when the Color picker opens the button button 'Device' becomes available.  When clicking on the button, it opens the 'Device colors' dialog with fields to enter the ink values. If you wish to switch to Color picker, simply click on the 'Picker' button in the dialog.

To see the unit for each ink, press shortcut 'alt' select the % icon and mouse-click. Then values will turn to units 0-255 values.

DeltaE warning

Working in RGB profiles and coloring in LAB space will show a deltaE warning. Clicking in the warning will get the most possible color.

Colorway with texture

With the Image tab the Method Texture-Fill will be introduced. It gives the possibility to apply an RGB image in the separation channel as a texture. The repetition, offset and the scale factor of the RGB image can be managed from the tab.

When the image is applied in the separation channel, it will fill out the full channel. Simultaneously, the channel is shown with the image and the path of the image location.

Coloring with HSL Slider

With the HSL you can change the hue, saturation and the lightness of the color. These changes can be applied to all channels simultaneously.

Pressing the button under the colorations list (small previews) or right-clicking on any coloration, a dialog opens with the options Hue… The HSL slider can also be opened from the Channel options window.

Measure Colors to Coloration

Another way to add color into coloration is by reading them from a spectrophotometer device. Before you start reading the colors, you will have to calibrate the white reference of the spectrophotometer.

Open the 'Channel options' window of one color channel. Place the device on a color reference and use it to operate a measurement. The color will be measured in the selected channel. When you keep measuring (spot measurement for one color reference) while Channel Options window is open, each measured color will be assigned to the next channel of the design.

Or else, from color picker of one color channel from Channel Options windows you can measure colors. Place the device on a color target and click on Read color... button to operate a measurement.

Coloring with Color Selector

The color selector is located below the coloration previews. Selecting one color with  in the image of the main preview window will show you its values and color. The picker is available in the image when moving the mouse.

It provides the option to view values between Native, Grayscale, RGB, CMYK, HSL, HSB, Lab and XYZ when right-click on values.

If you work with device ink colorations, drag color from color channel inside and drop it in the color selector to view the device ink color values.

Copy-Paste Coloring

You can copy-paste colorways from one colorway to another when working on multiple documents and colorway list. Simply copy single or multiple selected channels with sub-option 'Copy',

then select the colorway you want to applied the copied channel color with sub-option 'Paste'.
